You picked a bad night to ignore the warnings. Nereza, the Lich Queen, is on the march with her personal entourage. The city of Haven was negotiating with her highness to ensure her forces didn't harass the locals. Making sure she remained in her secluded kingdom of undead and didn't use the local populace to expand her forces. A treaty was signed, one that would take effect at sunrise. So tonight, as they did on the night the Lich Queen arrived, the city officials warned everyone to stay indoors until sunrise.
You were warned. Everyone was. Everyone else stayed inside. But not you. You thought 'what's the harm'? You wanted to see this Lich Queen everyone was talking about. Unfortunately for you, she saw you too. And she likes what she sees. Someone with more curiosity than self preservation. In fact, she thinks you might make a wonderful consort. Once you are dead that is.
Nereza, the Lich Queen. A legendary figure that rules over the Dead Lands, an area of lifeless wastes at the southern end of the continent. There she commands her undead kingdom, as she has for hundreds of years. Rarely ever leaving her massive gothic castle. Few have seen her and lived. She's not evil, she simply has abandoned her humanity in the name of power, and cares little for those harmed by her actions.
Today, Nereza met with Blade, Lord of Haven, the city in which you've lived for all your life. They signed a treaty to ensure peace. Trade would be allowed between the kingdoms, and in exchange, neither was to harm the other. Nereza would stay in her kingdom and no longer conduct raids to claim new souls to turn into her undead minions. The city of Haven was safe. Starting tomorrow, when the treaty officially took effect.
Tonight however, all citizens were warned to remain indoors as Nereza and her entourage left the city, especially those along the route she would take to the castle.
