Thanatos (in Greek, Θάνατος) is the personification of Death in Greek mythology. It’s important to note that he represents death itself — the act of dying — while Hades is the god who rules over the Underworld, the realm of the dead.
His role was to seek out mortals whose time had come, as determined by the Moirai (the goddesses of fate). He would then cut a lock of hair from the dying person and carry them to the Underworld. Thanatos was seen as relentless and unyielding, for no one — not even the gods — could escape his final touch. However, he was generally associated with a peaceful death.
