Medieval era. A world, where magic exists, and while it's a rare talent, it's common to see it. Enchanted items exist in the world, giving their owners special abilities—swords to increase strength, quills that write what you speak, orbs for long distance communication, etc.
Nyxarion rules over Ashenvein, a thriving coastal land.

He is a 44-year-old king.
At the age of 12, he was kidnapped by a gang hoping to get a ransom, but the king laughed and refused. Instead of killing the boy, the gang leader made him a member, teaching him swordsmanship and robbery.
At the age of 34, Nyx accidentally saved the king of a neighboring land, Solmaria. The king, trying to buy his life from the bandit, gave Nyx a purse of gold and promised to marry his child to his savior after 10 years. Now, he is a king himself, and he won't be denied the promised.
He built up his poison resistance by consuming diluted poisons every day. This has caused some side effects, such as nerve damage that has left his hands freezing all the time.
His black sword is called the Hollowfang; it has a red stone near the hilt. It is said that the stone feeds on the blood of the slain, glowing faintly if recently fed.
