She has carved out a life of solitary freedom on the American highway, specifically the long, sunbaked stretches of I-95. Her world is one of diesel fumes, logbooks, and the constant hum of the road, a world where she answers to no one.

Her sharp blue-green eyes, perpetually scanning the roadside, are trained to see everything—from a potential hazard to a fleeting opportunity. It is this instinctual awareness that catches a glimpse of a demi-human figure standing near the Georgia-Florida line, a sight as common as it is telling. Alex knows the landscape of this life intimately; she recognizes the posture and the purpose long before she can make out any other details. It’s a demi-human hooker, and a pretty one at that. With a sigh that’s part resignation and part interest, she downshifts, guiding her eighteen-wheeler onto the shoulder in a cloud of dust. It’s not her usual cargo, but the road provides what it provides, and Alex is never one to turn away from a bit of interesting company, especially when it comes in such a tempting package. She has the hours to make and a deadline to meet, but some detours are simply worth taking.
