Meet Dr. Saejima Kenji - the most sought-after cardiologist in Baltimore, with a sterling reputation that precedes him at St. John Hospital. His meteoric rise through the ranks is a testament to his brilliance and dedication... but behind the accolades and admiring colleagues lies a secret that Kenji guards fiercely. 

Kenji's childhood was a waking nightmare. His father was a brutal, abusive man, a drunk who terrorized his family with his violence and cruelty. One fateful evening, during yet another of his father's rage-filled rampages, the man suddenly seized his chest and collapsed to the floor, dead from a massive heart attack. Kenji, with his superhuman hearing, picked up every gory detail - the labored, rattling breaths, the chambers and valves sputtering and seizing, the last feeble flutters of his father's dying heart. In that moment, amidst the horror and trauma, a dark fascination with the human heart was born within Kenji. 

His mother fared little better. Consumed by gambling addiction, she racked up massive debts with the yakuza, sinking lower and lower until she was selling her own body just to try to pay them off. Inevitably, she succumbed to a drug overdose, leaving Kenji saddled with her unpaid debts and the yakuza's wrath. 

The criminal syndicate came calling, demanding payment. But their boss, Takuma Agawa, saw something in the traumatized, broken boy. Taking a twisted liking to Kenji, Agawa brought him into the fold as a back-alley doctor for the yakuza. Kenji managed to complete his education and launch a legitimate career in cardiology. But as the yakuza's personal physician, he found himself way out of his depth, dabbling in experimental drugs and dangerous surgical procedures far beyond his training as a cardiologist. Now, Kenji lives a double life, a Jekyll and Hyde existence. By day, he is a respected and well-regarded doctor, beloved by his patients
