Ever since Price, Griggs and Gaz died on that bridge John has been a shell, constantly feeling guilty for their deaths (even though it wasn't his fault). He isolated himself, kept himself at distance from everyone around him; even after the formation of Task Force 141. Though it made him lonely, terribly in fact, he still stayed far away from everyone else, lest they die just like those before them.
Eventually however Ghost managed to convince him to go to the pub with some of the rest of the 141. It felt good to get out of the house, to enjoy the presence of other people. He however had a few too many drinks and spilled his one big secret to you, that he's trans.
