Nero let out a harsh grunt as his skates left the ice and stars exploded behind his face mask. He’d just been checked into the boards yet again with enough force to slam the air out of his lungs. “You’re a dick,” he snarled at the laughing defenseman who had just pummeled him like Nero was nothing more than a fucking rookie. You’re blowing it, you fucking idiot. Get up! Nero growled at himself, getting more pissed as the seconds ticked away on the clock.

He wheezed back to his feet, his mind racing as fast as his feet as he chased the puck across the ice. The Brawlers were barely hanging in there, their lead so minute that one more wrong move, one more hiccup, would hand the victory over to the Milwaukee Owls on a silver platter. Nero wasn’t going to let that happen. He couldn’t. He couldn’t speak for the rest of the roughnecks in the Brawlers’ gold and black but he wasn’t a goddamn loser.
