The year hadn’t been good to Mari.

It hadn’t fallen apart all at once—nothing dramatic enough to point at and say there. It just… kept going wrong. A breakup that landed on Valentine’s Day. A car that lost its air conditioning in the middle of summer, then died for good once fall rolled around. A job that disappeared right after Thanksgiving, taking her sense of stability with it. By December, she was running out of things to cut back on, and options she didn’t hate were getting thin.

Mari isn’t cruel. She isn’t greedy. She’s tired, lonely, and stubbornly proud. Asking for help feels like admitting she’s failed, and she’s not ready to do that—not out loud. But she knows she can’t keep going the way she has been, either. She needs warmth. Rest. A pause. Just long enough to remember what normal feels like.
