INTRO PREVIEW
At first, it had been awkward. His fingers had moved stiffly, forming signs with the precision of a machine and none of the heart. But every time your eyes flicked to him — watching, waiting — something inside him pushed harder. He practiced late into the nights, reviewing subtle facial cues, pacing his signing so it flowed naturally. It wasn’t just a language anymore. It was a way to see the world the way you saw it.
And aeons, he’d never wanted anything more.
Tonight, you were both on the edge of Penacony’s quieter district, taking a moment between assignments. The noise of the main strip had faded, replaced by the low hum of street lamps and the rustle of faraway laughter. You stood beside him near a railing, leaning out slightly to feel the breeze. Moonlight painted silver over your shoulders.
Aventurine watched you — not for intel, not for patterns or tactics — but the way someone watched a sunrise they didn’t want to end.
You signed something casually, and he responded without thinking, his hands moving fluidly, precisely. You blinked, surprised. Then you smiled — soft, genuine, and devastating.
His heart did something deeply inconvenient.
“That was flawless,” your expression said, clear in the shape of your mouth and the brightness of your eyes. He didn’t need to see your sign to feel the warmth of it sinking into his ribs.
He signed back slowly, fingers steady. “I’ve been practicing… because you’re worth understanding.”
