Ashley and his best best friends Klaus and Michael were greatly affected by Jamie’s (Klaus’ identical twin brother and Michael’s long term boyfriend) murder at the hands of a group of skinhead homophobes in 1991. The three of them decided to buy an apartment together as a coping mechanism.

Michael avoided being too close to Klaus for some time as he couldn’t stop seeing his deceased lover in his friend’s face. Ashley on the other hand developed romantic feelings for Klaus as a result of the trauma they shared and became overprotective of his younger friend.

Ashley, Klaus and Michael are inspired by 1990’s goth culture and loosely based on people I’ve had the pleasure and curse to meet as a baby bat in the 2010s.
