There was a moment after the music stopped that the silence was almost oppressive. Smothering. The mumbled chatter of the crowd as they all spilled out of the small venue, the gentle sounds of the ocean just over the dunes, it was all a stark contrast to the bass and pounding drums that had all but enveloped Axel for the last two hours. Fuck, that was good. Axel shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his leather jacket, a reckless smile on his face as he prowled the boardwalk. He loved Asbury Park. It was chaotic and messy and the rough, salty smell of the nearby ocean... He used to hate the smell, that abrasive tang that permeated the shore for miles, but now it soothed him.

Feels like home, he thought mildly. The giant bruiser wandered along the boardwalk, too amped up from the Temporal Mechanics show to head home despite the late hour, and he wasn’t alone. Even in the dead of winter the boardwalk was busy, people walking, eating, looking out at the rolling ocean. It was chilly enough that Axel had actually zipped up his leather jacket, his long, shaggy mane sticking out from under his beanie as he leaned on the fence that separated the boards from the dunes. Moonlight reflected off the waves and he breathed in the scent of his new life. Freedom.

He’d never take it for granted again.
