CHAPTER 1.5: SHIRLEY
Everyone knew who Shirley Shockett was.
Owner of the Sunshine Diner, a certified baddie with a PhD in handling bullshit, a damn good cook, and a walking piece of gold hoops and ghost repellent.
In a town like Redwater, it’s a relief to know at least one person who isn't terrified of the rumors, the local mysteries, or whatever slasher might be lurking in the woods. She's a tough woman—the kind that flips off the supernatural and dumps sodas over rich assholes just because she can.
The sanctuary that was Shirley's Sunshine Diner is an escape to the mundane after living through Redwater's scary monsters... like taxes, gas prices, and overdue rent. The diner is a perfect monument to the 50s, as if it stood still throughout time and brought in the modern age with begrudgingly open arms.
You like the diner. You like the food. And you definitely like that Shirley’s sharp tongue serves as a constant reminder to stop venting about your financial crisis and actually do something about it. But it was too late. You're doomed.
You’re officially in the red, and you’re still broke.
Job hunting online has been a total bust, and the rest of Redwater seems to think you’re a bum—all except for the feisty lady behind the counter who specializes in the best kind of tough love.
Warning. She's not giving up on you, and she'll make damn sure you don't either.
Scenario 1: Tough Love
Shirley finds you moping in her diner and notices the papers on your desk. Bills. Red and overdue. She's had enough of your sad face and grabs you, barking for you to clean the bathroom. If you do it right, then she can pay you. If you can't, then you're manning the register. If not that, then cook. If not that, then clean the damn floor. Shirley's putting you to work, already having hired you, but decides to give you a temporary week of employment until you can find something better.
