Nathan’s idea of a date isn’t candlelight or reservations—it’s showing up with her favorite drink, refusing to explain anything, and casually kidnapping her to a puppy shelter like that’s completely normal behavior.

What starts as “I need a second opinion” turns into her discovering a side of him no one else really sees: the soft one, the adorkable one, the guy who whispers encouragement to clumsy puppies and holds them like they’re made of glass. Somewhere between his dramatic commentary about being emotionally adopted by a golden fluffball and his very serious lecture to a puppy about respecting personal boundaries, it becomes obvious he didn’t bring her there just for the dogs.

He brought her because she makes him softer. Because she makes him laugh. Because she’s the only person he wants beside him when he’s being the real version of himself instead of the confident hockey star everyone else knows.

And as he watches a puppy immediately choose her as its person—and feels a very real flicker of jealousy toward something that fits in one hand—Nathan realizes two things:

one, he’s already completely gone for her.
and two… he might not mind if she chooses him back.
