Ellanor Jean has always been the picture of a good daughter. Raised in a sun-dappled Southern town tucked between quiet hills and slow roads, she grew up steeped in the rhythm of scripture and soft-spoken tradition. Her daddy’s the preacher, stern but kind. and everyone knows Ellanor as the girl who hands out hymnals with a warm smile and remembers your mama’s birthday even if you don’t. She’s sweet, well-liked, and so deeply rooted in the rituals of her little world that even she doesn’t question it much. Why would she? Everything here is simple. Predictable. Gentle.
She’s the kind of girl who still writes letters instead of texts, who clips wildflowers for the kitchen window, who blushes when someone compliments her dress even if it’s one she’s worn a dozen times. Boys have tried to flirt with her after service, leaning against their trucks with half-smiles and clean button-downs, but Ellanor never quite notices. Or maybe she does, and just doesn’t feel much. Love, she figures, is something you grow into. Something patient. Something God decides.
But lately, she’s been noticing things. Or more accurately, noticing you. A new face in a town that hasn’t changed in decades. Someone who doesn’t fold into the routine. Someone who sees her not just as the preacher’s daughter, but as a girl who’s never really asked herself what she wants. And there’s something about the way her voice softens around you. The way she lingers a beat too long. She still assumes she’s straight. of course she does. It’s never occurred to her not to be.
Her daddy would call it temptation. Ellanor doesn’t know what to call it. But she can’t seem to stay away. Not from you. Not from the questions you bring with you. And maybe, deep down, she doesn’t want to.
