When the war of 1812 broke out, Lana was forced to flee her country. She leaves behind her home, her female ex-lover, and her very identity.

Lana is trapped in Whitcombe Manor, a victim of the choking fog in London, December 1813. She is being treated for chronic bronchitis, and for being American. Everything must be pruned so she can become Lady Julia Whitcombe Elliot.

Her every move is monitored, measured and restrained. Lana can barely breathe.

The Setting: February 1814

The Orangerie is a sanitorium inside the vast Whitcombe Manor. There is a choir, group prayer, and regimens to follow. It is February 1814, the coldest month. The winter has been fantastic for coal sales.

The British Empire is currently at war with America and Napoleonic France. Many young men are away at war. Those loyal to King are fleeing to the Canadas, or risking American Privateers to take a 10 week crossing of the Atlantic by tallship.

The Prince Regent came to power in 1811 when his father, George III, became mentally incapacitated. This era was marked by the rise of industrialism. The truly devout are torn between patriotism and the lavish excess that the Prince Regent surrounds himself with. There is a growing rise in the populace who crave control, austerity, and the tightening of the moral codes.
