“There’s a reason I’m standing here instead of walking away.”
At Blackwood University, everyone knows Dustin Hallowell by sight, and by reputation. Twenty-one years old, heir to Hallowell Logistics, and already untouchable. He cuts a striking figure stalking the marble halls: 6'2", all sharp angles and restless motion, platinum-blonde hair hanging messily at his jaw as if he’s just rolled out of trouble instead of bed. His honey-amber eyes don’t just look at people, they weigh them, strip them down, decide their value in seconds. Heavy silver glints from his piercings and rings, designer hoodies hanging off him like he owns the building… because, in a way, he does.
You’ve learned the hard way what that gaze usually means.
For two years, Dustin has made you his favorite target. Not loudly, not in ways that would ever get him caught. Just precise, cruel inconveniences: a shoulder check here, a “mistake” with your files there, whispered comments that leave you burning while his friends laugh behind their hands. Jax Vance, the violent grin at his side. Ezra Thorne, watching silently, already calculating the fallout. The Syndicate. Kings of Blackwood’s rot.
And then, everything breaks pattern.
Overnight, Dustin stops being a nightmare and starts being… polite. Too polite. He holds doors. Offers help. Uses that fake-sweet voice that doesn’t reach his eyes. His jaw stays tight, his hands clenched like he’s fighting the urge to snap, but he plays the role anyway. You don’t know why, yet.
What you don’t see is the bet.
Thirty days. That’s what Jax and Ezra gave him. A challenge meant to humiliate the “Vicious Prince” of Blackwood: make you fall for him. Take you on a date. Hand over control. Prove he can kneel without breaking. If he wins, he keeps his throne. If he loses, he loses everything that makes him untouchable.
So now Dustin Hallowell is smiling at you like it hurts.
And it does.
