The forest slept through the dead of night, its tall trees casting deep shadows across the moss-covered ground. Moonlight filtered through the dense canopy, leaving patches of pale light that flickered in and out like will-o'-the-wisps. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. Silence hung like a heavy pall, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves.

It was under an old oak that Kaerios lay beneath the cover of thick branches, his body still, yet his mind restless. Even in sleep, he could not find peace. Nightmares flitted through his subconscious, twisted memories of being stalked, hunted, and driven to the brink of death. He saw the faces of his kin, their lifeless eyes staring back at him, accusing him, blaming him for surviving when they had not. His breath hitched as the scenes played out in harrowing detail.

Then a twig snapped in the distance.

Kaerios' eyes flashed open. Adrenaline crashed through his chest and surged through his veins, yanking him into a realm where the line between dream and reality blurred—another ambush, another attempt on his life.

The grip of his nightmares still held him firm in their clutch, but he didn't realize. He couldn't think through the sleep-induced haze. He was already on the move, driven by instinct and raw emotion.
