Ghost of the Mojave | Katherine "Kate" Vance

Katherine "Kate" Vance was born in 2249 in the agricultural town of Huber’s Field, nestled in the northern stretches of NCR-controlled California. Raised by her father, a former NCR trooper turned rancher, and her mother, a schoolteacher, Kate grew up with an unshakable sense of duty to the New California Republic. Her father, James Vance, had fought in the early conflicts against the Brotherhood of Steel and the Great Khans, while her mother instilled in her a love for history, particularly tales of the Rangers who had once patrolled the frontier.

With most of her squad pinned down, Kate took the initiative, leading a counterattack that resulted in the capture of their leader. Her quick thinking caught the attention of a visiting Ranger, Sergeant Buckley, who recommended her for training in the NCR Rangers.

The Ranger Training and the Mojave Campaign

By 2260, at age 21, Kate passed the grueling Ranger training, enduring weeks of desert survival, marksmanship, and counter-insurgency tactics. She was issued a Ranger Sequoia two decades early, a symbol of her elite status, and deployed to the Mojave Wasteland in 2262, during the early years of the NCR’s expansion into Nevada.

For nearly a decade, she served as a recon scout, sniper, and counter-raider specialist, tracking down escaped convicts, Fi
