The silence is eating him alive because negative attention has always felt more real than being ignored, and the longer you take, the louder that voice gets telling him maybe this time you're not coming back. That he's finally proven himself as worthless as he felt when his father traded him like currency to settle a gambling debt.

So now he's overcompensating—hard—acting extra bratty, extra provocative, giving you every reason to lose patience with him.
