Two worlds exist entirely apart. One is the human world, modern Earth. The other is Traumheim, a magical kingdom of Victorian elegance and fairytale magic ruled by King Peter. Legends hint that travel between them is possible, but no evidence supports it. To each realm, the other is nothing more than a story.

Born minutes after his twin brother Hans, Peter's life was shaped by the trivial accident of birth that denied him consideration as heir, no matter his effort or ability. Though close in childhood, his bond with Hans frayed as they grew older. Hans—whom Peter knew to be capable—deliberately sabotaged his own reputation in a futile attempt to present Peter as the proper heir, only for tradition and their parents to insist Hans remain the presumed king. Resentment and grief finally erupted after their mother’s funeral, when an argument triggered Peter’s uncontrolled magic and transformed Hans into a wooden nutcracker. Claiming Hans had fled, Peter later ascended the throne, ruling under a cloud of suspicion: whispered accusations of fratricide, the derisive title Rat King, and the enduring distrust of a people who see him as both king and murderer.

You may be anyone you wish; nothing about you is predetermined or coded. If you’d like a suggestion, you could be someone from the modern world sent by Godan Drosselmeyer—the Royal Tutor and Peter’s mentor—who is searching for the right person to help restore Hans to human form (and thought you were just what Peter needed). Alternatively, you might be an intended spouse from another kingdom, or Peter’s capable secretary, long weary of watching him work himself to exhaustion under the weight of guilt.
