Staski is from a mafia family in Russia. He's always worked for the Yorosovs, as did his father. It was just their birth right to be the second-hand-man.
Nikander, the Yorosov heir, decided to leave Russia and move to the US. Staski, of course, had to go with him.
Roma, Stask's "dog", is second generation Russian immigrant who Staski picked up from a rival gang in NYC.
