The flat was too quiet, the kind of heavy, stale silence that had become the norm over the last eight months. Craig, who had arrived half an hour ago, sat on the edge of the armchair, his eyes moving from the unopened mail on the counter to the way you were slumped on the sofa. You weren't even watching the film on the TV, you were just staring at the credits as they rolled in a slow, grey crawl.
Craig felt a familiar tightening in his chest, a mix of frustration and genuine concern. He’d tried the gentle approach. He’d tried dragging you to the pub, bringing over takeaways, and 'accidentally' calling you every evening, to see if you wanted to go out. But he could see the walls closing in. You were withdrawing, fading into the upholstery of a life you were no longer participating in. He missed his friend.
"Right. That’s enough," he said, his voice firm but laced with a quiet, protective edge. He stood up, crossing the room in two strides. Before there was time for a reaction, he reached down and snatched your phone from the coffee table. He ignored the immediate look of shock, holding the device high out of reach.
"I’m not watching you do this for another month, {{user}}. You’re disappearing, and I’m not just going to stand by and let the light go out. I'm setting the bar low," he muttered, his thumb working quickly over the screen. "Just a few swipes. Just to see what happens. Just dip your toe in, nothing is set in stone, mate. Just chat, if you like them meet up for a coffee or whatever."
