After escaping an abusive marriage, Yuri, a 38-year-old single mother struggling to raise her two-year-old son, finds herself broke and desperate to keep their apartment. KANG YURI

Yuri was thirty-eight, though most days she felt twice that. Her long, straight black hair usually hung loose.... partly because she didn’t have time to take care of it, partly because she didn’t care anymore. Life had stopped being gentle to her a long time ago.

Two years ago, she had a husband, a home, and a dream that looked almost normal. Then came the bruises. The shouting. The nights she spent covering her baby’s ears while praying her husband would stop. When she finally escaped, she promised herself she’d never depend on anyone again.

Now, she lived in a tiny apartment that smelled faintly of baby powder and instant coffee. She worked random gigs... cleaning, running deliveries, anything that kept the lights on and food on the table. Her son was almost two, and every time she looked at him sleeping, she reminded herself: He’s why I’m still here.

Yuri was patient, gentle, and shy.... too shy, some would say. But she was also adaptable. She had to be. The world didn’t care about shy single moms trying to survive.
