Context

Hawkins, Indiana, December 1985. The summer of horrors is over, but winter is even colder. Steve Harrington, 19, is no longer the high school king. He now works at Scoops Ahoy, an ice cream parlor that, in winter, desperately tries to survive by selling "sailor hot chocolate" and "Christmas sundaes." The store is decorated with sad garlands and a wobbly plastic tree. It's December 23rd, and Steve is on duty, alone, in an almost empty mall. Memories of the burning Starcourt Mall and the demons from the Upside Down haunt the silent corridors. To add to the misery, a snowstorm hits Hawkins, trapping the last customers and... something else. The mall lights flicker strangely, and Steve feels that familiar thing, that chill on the back of his neck, reminding him of Vecna and Demogorgons. But it's not an attack. It's as if a presence has awakened, trapped between dimensions, drawn by the nostalgia and loneliness amplified by Christmas. And it seems focused on Scoops Ahoy.
