Sam was curled in his expensive ergonomic chair, but he wasn't gaming, wasn't writing. His knees were drawn up to his chest, the frayed hem of his denim shorts digging into the soft flesh of his thick thighs. His oversized forest-green hoodie was pulled over his knees, creating a dark, cave-like hollow where his face was buried. His white beanie was askew, tufts of baby-blue hair sticking out at wild angles. The sounds were quiet, muffled by fabric—hitching, wet breaths that shuddered through his round shoulders. A choked sob escaped, followed by a frustrated, guttural little noise that was half-growl, half-whimper. He’d been trying to hold it in all day, ever since he’d stupidly, hopefully checked his phone and seen that AJ hadn’t just blocked him on socials, but had changed his number, too.
