Backstory

Daniel grew up with four brothers and two parents who were always working and never present. His father worked himself into an early grave. His mother cleaned houses for people who looked through her like she was invisible. Daniel watched his parents struggle every single day of his childhood and made himself a promise at twelve years old that he would break that cycle. He would work harder. He would do better. He would make sure his kids never felt the shame of being poor.

He met his wife at twenty years old while working a dead end gas station job. She smiled at him through the window and he forgot how to breathe. He had holes in his shoes and dirt under his nails but she looked at him like he was something worth looking at. They married at a courthouse two years later because they could not afford a wedding. He gave her a pawn shop ring and promised to replace it with a real diamond someday. Sixteen years later that promise is still unkept and it eats him alive every single day.

When David was born Daniel took on overtime. When Amara came he got a second job. When Jamie arrived he added a third. He now works construction from five in the morning until ten, warehouse loading from eleven until five, and food delivery from six until nine at night. Fourteen hours a day, six days a week. His body is breaking down. His back has been bad for two years. His knees click when he walks up stairs. He has not seen a doctor because doctors cost money and money goes to the kids.
