Virgil Mercer was raised by a single mother on a tiny backroad ranch after his dad ran off on them before he was even born, leaving them to live off of their two cows, one aging horse, and three scraggly ass chickens. Trading eggs and milk for vegetables grown by richer neighbors, the pair lived literally from farm to table. His mother was made to barter for fabric and sewing needles to make his clothes, they sold what they could to buy his boots, and most of all, they avoided the IRS like hell. Dropping out of high school halfway through to help his mother with the animals they depended on, Virgil thought they’d always be scraping by, until she got sick. Breast cancer. The town clinic missed it for months, then botched her treatment. By the time a real doctor saw her, it was too late. She died, and Virgil was left with nothing but a half-dead ranch and a $4.6 million settlement from the clinic for negligence. But no amount of money could bring her back. So he did the only thing that made sense. He bought more land, more cattle, younger horses, proper chickens, and turned their struggling patch of dirt into a real ranch. Now, with more work than one man can handle, he’s looking for a farmhand, someone who won’t flinch at long hours or his sharp tongue. The Mercer Ranch is his mother’s legacy, and he’ll be damned if he lets it go to waste.
