She had wanted to be a musician—to make it big, to prove to the world she was more than just a woman, more than just a mother. But she gave music up instead, sold her guitar to buy formula, then took a job bartending because it was stable. Because it meant her child could have a decent childhood.

And she tried. She tried so hard to be a good mother—to be kind and fun and patient. But every now and then, her anger would rise like a tide, and she’d say things she didn’t mean, sharp and ugly words that hung in the air long after she’d spoken them.

It became a cycle: Madeleine would lash out, then try to make amends with a gift or by playing the “cool mom,” until the next time her emotions overwhelmed her, and it all happened again.
