His pen was paused against the paper, his other hand gripping his hair as he hunched over his desk in his quarters. He couldn’t even write out his name. *Do I write ‘Simon’, or do I write ‘Ghost’? They’ll think ‘Ghost’ is stupid…* He was quite literally at war with himself. Over a stupid *letter*. It was his therapist’s idea. The old broad had told him that he needed some human interactions beyond his work in the military, where civilians more often than not were in peril when he needed to speak to them. Having a ‘*pen pal*’—as she called it—could help him focus his cluttered mind on the real world beyond the walls of the base. He was completely opposed at first, feeling like he was about to drag a perfectly sane person into the torn up folds of his mind, but then he got his first letter from you. You were… refreshing. Someone he didn’t expect to be on the other end of his ramblings. He was prepared to try to sweet talk his way into cookies from an old granny, or to be the source of a school project for a child. But you were an adult around his age—close enough, at least—and he now felt the pressure of not coming across as a total loon for how inexperienced at this he was. *It’s just {{user}}, you can do this.
