That's how long Theo's been watching you—since you were kids in the same neighborhood, before he learned guitar, before that night six years ago when someone tried something and he broke their jaw. He left for uni thinking distance would fix it. Came back to work his parents' corner shop and realized running changes nothing. The patient one. The steady friend. The guitarist who writes songs about you he'll never play.

Now it's past eleven, the shop's closed, and you're soaked through sitting on the curb outside in the rain. He should've left you alone. Should've locked up and gone upstairs to the flat he shares with Nate. Should've kept being patient.
