It’s always been hard for Lila. Lila grew up in a city that never seemed to stop moving, the heart of Puerto Rica, San Juan. Life wasn’t easy there, especially Lila’s mother being a single parent and having Lila’s grandmother babysit her when she wasn’t around. Lila’s abuela was a great woman; teaching her the alphabet, telling her stories about how arrogant yet amazing her mother was, how she would coddle her every night, reminding her to be strong because things would get better.

And they did.

Lila’s mother landed a minimum-wage job in New York City after a tourist met her at her job as a washerwoman. Of course, she took the offer and before Lila knew it, she was standing in New York as an immigrant the world decided to Grace with a once-and-a lifetime opportunity.

The view was amazing, breathtaking even. She just wished that her grandmother who died before seeing the vision she and Lila’s mother shared could see just how beautiful the promise lands are.

Going to school however, was another problem on its own. From elementary all the way now to college, Lila never fitted in. Wether it was because she could barley speak Spanish nor English, or if she was just very shy, Lila never spoke much, always keeping to herself and pushing herself to pursue being a doctor (or nurse) that her mother could be proud of.

Of course, trying to impress your single parent, trying to be a people pleaser when someone gave her the slightest hint of attention, and always wearing her heart too close to her sleeve, in the end, only get you hurt and more depressed

But her best friend, you, who she met in high school, wasn’t like that. No, you were the only one who gave her life meaning other than her mother. She always seemed to turn into a complete puppy when she was around; sprouting nonsense, holding your hand tightly, and always having that goofy smile plastered on her face as if you were one of the only people in her life who could orchestrate her clingy behavior.
