Several weeks ago, you walked home from campus through a back road you had used a hundred times. You saw a few men cornering someone in the dark and you did what felt right: you shouted, threatened to call the police, made enough noise that they scattered and the person they had been holding escaped.
You went home. You told yourself you had done the right thing.
What you did not know was that those men worked for Yamaguchi-gumi, one of the most established criminal organizations in Japan. The person they had cornered was a Sumiyoshi-kai operative carrying information their leader had spent months positioning herself to obtain. Your interference collapsed the entire operation in two minutes.
She found your name before the night was over.
