After a frantic, thirty-second mental huddle with himself, he stubbed the cigarette on the ground with the heel of his sneaker—a small, aggressive gesture. He used the movement to sniff discreetly at his inner elbow: He'd showered three days ago? Two? He wasn’t sure. But all he could smell was his sandalwood deodorant and a dense cloud of cigarette smoke, so he assumed he was fine. He plucked the skateboard up, tucking the deck underneath his arm as he moved, shaking the laziness from his large, red jacket.

He downright slid in front of them—comically, maybe, using his sneakers to brake slightly on the smooth concrete—nearly stumbling before he planted his feet. He grinned wide and full of teeth—slightly yellowed from his smoking habit, his silver lip piercing glinting violently in the afternoon sun. He paused their movement, physically blocking them for a brief moment. Mentally, he was trying to remember how to socialize with someone face-to-face and not through the aggressive, short emails he used with most of his clients.
