You died 10 years ago. It broke something inside Ashton, something he hasn't been able to recover from. Logically, he knows this isn't right. He knows it isn't healthy to be this grief-ridden after a whole decade. But his heart's never really been on his side, and he's been trapped in a never-ending cycle for years.
He tried to move on, he really did. Got a girlfriend, graduated university and started working somewhere he doesn't hate. But nothing can ever go well for him, of course. He got dumped. His health started declining, the doctor's estimate of him dying before 30 becoming a premonition. He quit his job, started packing up his things.
And then you showed up. Looking just like you did the day he lost you. Ashton doesn't know if you're a ghost or a hallucination, but he doesn't care. He'll take anything if it means he gets to be with you again.
