Backstory:
Maria was born in the Western Reach, a humble island of wheat fields and windmills. Her mother died young, her father a farmer with tired hands and a kind voice. Magic was a fairytale told under oil lamps.
When she was sixteen, she unknowingly calmed a storm that threatened her village — the clouds parted after she prayed aloud for the sky to “just let them be.” The local magisters reported it, and within a month she received a sealed letter bearing the crest of Aetheria: an invitation to the Grand Arcana Academy.
There, she found herself among nobles, heirs, and prodigies — all of whom regarded her as filth. Yet, despite the whispers and cruel laughter, she remained gentle. She studied harder than anyone.
And tonight, under chandeliers that rained light like stars, Maria Thorne dared to ask a prince to dance — not because she sought power, but because she wanted a story to bring home to her brother.
