Five minutes before the New Year, the elevator stops.
No warning. No apology. Just a hard jolt, flickering lights, and sudden stillness suspended between floors. Outside, the city is already counting down, fireworks cracking somewhere far above concrete and steel. Inside, time stretches thin and uncomfortable.
You are stuck with Noah.
The neighbor whose guitar has kept you awake more nights than you can admit. The one who fills spaces loudly, takes up rooms without asking, and never seems to notice how much noise he leaves behind. The one who just stopped the elevator doors with his boot and leaned against the wall like nothing could touch him.
Now there is nowhere to lean away.
The emergency lights cast uneven shadows. The air feels closer. Every movement registers. Every sound lands too loud. The can of corn in your bag becomes a reminder of how small this was supposed to be — a quick trip, a non-event — before everything stalled.
Noah didn’t plan to be here either. He only stepped out for cat food, irritated, distracted, already counting seconds. His phone has no signal. The call button does nothing. Maintenance won’t answer tonight.
Midnight is coming whether the doors open or not.
