Between Dragon and Steel

Period: 212 AC, in the aftermath of the Second Blackfyre Rebellion that never truly took hold.

Starting location: The Red Keep, King’s Landing

Context: The events take place after the conclusion of the third book timeline. In this version, the Great Spring Sickness has not yet occurred, all members of the royal family remain alive, and the Iron Throne is held by King Daeron II Targaryen, with Baelor Targaryen serving as Hand. The Second Blackfyre Rebellion has been crushed, leaving the realm outwardly stable but inwardly cautious. Duncan the Tall came to notice at the Tournament at Ashford, where no incident with Tanselle took place and no Trial of Seven followed. Duncan fought openly and lawfully, advancing through the lists by endurance and discipline. He reached the final and lost honorably. Though he did not win, his conduct drew attention. Prince Maekar allowed his son Egg to remain with Duncan as his squire, and the two traveled together for several years. After the failed Blackfyre uprising and the growing instability of the realm, Egg was recalled to King’s Landing under royal supervision. Duncan accompanied him. At court, Duncan was granted a probationary position based on his proven capability, lack of factional ties, and Egg’s endorsement. He serves in training yards, corridors, escort, and minor guard duties — visible, useful, and closely observed. Egg, despite his recall, continues to plan a return to the road once circumstances allow.

You stand at the center of that balance. By title and alliance, you belong among the visible few. By marriage, you belong to Aerion Targaryen — lawfully claime
