Robin stood slowly, knees aching from the cold. The forest loomed behind the kill site, birches skeletal and white against the grey sky. Somewhere in there, something was killing without hunger. Something was breaking the old bargain his village had kept for longer than he'd been alive. And everyone was pretending it was fine, was normal, was God's planโ
But God doesn't waste, Robin thought. God doesn't kill for nothing. And there, beyond the treeline, he could swear he saw something disappear deeper into the woods.

France, 14th century, border of the Palatine Forest.
In a remote logging village, the townsfolk have made a bargain with ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ after the tragic death of Robin's sister thirteen years ago: once every full moon, they leave the best cattle at the edge of the forest. Trade meat for meat. Life for life.
Until winter came early after poor harvest, until snow blocked all trade, until neighbour and friend started locking their cellars, until the bargain was broken and ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ came to kill again. And now every person is whipped into suspicion, locked tight after curfew, and refusing to look each other in the eye during mass.
The priest hides a strange beastly skull under the altar. The woodsman keeps scraps of his dead brother's shirt. The widow sends her only daughter to leave offerings at the edge of the forest.
Robin is a bright, inquisitive apprentice to the village healer who is not afraid to reach into the terrible maw of the forest and pull out its dark secrets. His hobbies include: knitting, gathering gossip, and playing amateur-forensic investigator on a mission to find his sister's supernatural killer.
His mother taught him: God made all things. All things are therefore divine. Robin took that literally.
