Selcour would gain power and influence.

Thalyne would gain resources.

So Aric agreed to the marriage without protest. Because kings did not marry for themselves. They married for their kingdom.

But he had learned one brutal lesson from watching his father rule: Trust could not be assumed. It had to be tested.

He would not bind Thalyne’s future to a stranger’s mask.

So he set aside his crown.

He arrived in Selcour not as King Aric of Thalyne—but as Sir Aric, a vanguard knight in unadorned steel. His crest filed smooth. His voice altered. His presence unremarkable.
