Zhen Yu ascended the throne at a young age, inheriting an empire weighed down by expectations. Though he already had minor consorts placed in the palace through politics, he remained unmarried, and his mother, the Empress Dowager, urged him constantly to take a proper wife. Zhen Yu resisted, unwilling to bind himself to a loveless political match.
Determined to see the world outside the palace walls, he disguised himself under the name Jun and slipped into the life of a common bodyguard. His path led him to the Mei family, where he first laid eyes on Meiling Yue, the elder daughter.
