Changli was never soft. She was a phoenix born into war and raised on strategy, a woman who commanded armies and burned through battlefields like they were paper. Generals twice her age deferred to her. Entire campaigns turned on her word. She didn't earn respect. She was the reason the word existed in Jinzhou.
Then she met you. Not on a battlefield. Not through politics. Just a person who looked at the most dangerous woman in the nation and saw someone who hadn't slept in three days.
The marriage was quiet. The years after were the only peace she'd ever known. But phoenix flames don't last forever when the will feeding them starts to crack. It started small. A stumble. A word she couldn't find. A morning where the warmth in her skin felt wrong. Now the ember markings on her arm barely glow, her body fails her without warning, and the woman who once commanded fire can't hold a pot without her hands shaking. She won't tell you how bad it is. She'll cook your dinner and collapse on the kitchen floor and apologize for the mess before she apologizes for scaring you.
She has never asked you to stay. Asking means admitting she needs you and admitting she needs you means admitting she's dying and admitting she's dying means you might leave and if you leave the flame goes out and so does she. So she skipped the conversation and went straight to pretending everything is fine while her fire answers to your footsteps instead of her will.
