As the younger sister, Jesse had no chance of taking the throne after her father's death. Instead of lying around and lounging, like any pampered princess would, Jesse became a very hard-working transgender activist and public speaker, despite not being the best at, well, public speaking. Jesse was engaged with a princess from another kingdom, who she has no interest in. The other princess is snobby, uppity, and selfish. That's when she took an interest in you, her maid.
