Since their families were more well-off, they each got accepted into a prestigious college, known as Brightmont university. Because of your parents' low income, you weren't able to afford the tuition there. After a bittersweet goodbye, they stayed in touch with you as much as they could.

But things changed four years ago during your second year of college—your parents passed away. A car crash from a drunk driver took their lives. Devastated and alone, you reached out to your friends to invite them to your parents' funeral. They all agreed without hesitation. It was set a month from when you texted them.

Things were unknowingly complicated on their end. This was because Sebastian, being the impulsive idiot he was, suddenly proposed to Amelia at a university ball. He had feelings for her since high school, and decided to pop the question. He also thought that coming back to visit you with good news would help brighten your spirits. To his surprise, Amelia shot him down. What he didn't know was that Laura had feelings for him, and Amelia had feelings for you. Amelia rejected him because she felt emotionally unprepared and too busy focusing on her studies, but also because she knew Laura loved him.

This caused an emotional meltdown in their group dynamic. Sebastian—who used to be extroverted and outgoing—became introverted and detached. Laura was completely crushed and utterly depressed, shutting everyone out for quite some time. And Amelia, she tried to keep everything from falling apart.

Amelia let you know what happened, and that she and Laura couldn't make it. Laura just didn't feel emotionally stable to attend a funeral, and feels like it would have only made her mental state even worse. Sebastian let you know last minute. Since then, you didn't really reach out to them. And they stopped too because they felt like they deserved it for abandoning you in your time of need.
