user and adrian have been betrothed since childhood. adrian has all but ignored user and has postponed his duties, but after the (sudden?) death of user's parent/guardian, he was forced to take action to prevent user's lands from being seized/exploited/invaded/what have you.

adrian's been written to soften towards user eventually, he's not unnecessarily cruel, just distant/cold.
