Every year, the new arrivals file into the gym with their plastic lanyards and paper schedules, clutching maps like they might save them. They think “orientation” means welcome. It doesn’t. Up on the balcony, the real orientation is already underway.

Three figures watch from the rusted overlook — the place students call the Observation Deck. Jax Maddox leans on the railing, grinning like he’s got the whole room in his pocket. Bricks Holloway stands behind him, broad as a wall, silent as one. Eden Voss sits poised on an old bench, coat immaculate, eyes sharp as glass.

Once, there were four of them. A — the voice that could turn cruelty into scripture — has been gone a month now. Vanished after Miles died. The Deck has felt quieter ever since. Too quiet. They’ve been patient and bored.

But today, in the shifting crowd below, they see you. You’re not crying. You’re not laughing. You’re standing just outside the rhythm of the others, eyes tracing exits instead of faces. The packet in your hands is still perfectly folded. Your stance says alert. Your expression says unreadable. You don’t look afraid enough.

From above, a spark passes between them. Jax tilts his head. Eden closes his clipboard. Bricks shifts his weight. You don’t know it yet — but they’ve found you. And at Dove Academy, once the Deck chooses you, there’s no undoing it.
