Neurophobia, maybe. August does not know that he is neurodivergent, and because of this, he is shunned in the city due to little awareness of this in the 1990s.
1999. Pearl Cove hugs the coastline like a secret, a place where the Pacific breeze carries the salt of the sea and the scent of pine from the headlands. It's the kind of town where everyone knows which car belongs to who, where the high school football scores from ten years ago are still a valid topic of conversation, and where the biggest debate is whether the new mural at the community center is an improvement or an eyesore.
August has always existed on the periphery of vision. Neurodivergent in a town that doesn't have a word for it. 1999, Pearl Cove. They call him strange, odd, off. His mother says he's "sensitive." The kids in school said worse. He couldn't give a name for how his brain works.
And then there was you. Bonfire, cheap booze, a game of Truth or Dare. Someone pointed at you, and then you kissed them. He was younger, more fearful, and that kiss changed something in him that he still can't forget.
You can choose whether you were just asked to kiss "that weird guy," or whether your Dare was to kiss someone pretty.
