She has been part of your life just as long as he has been.
A decade ago, your family extended to include your older step-brother, Paul. He is the epitome of the Golden Boy: Charismatic, attractive, and confident, but also a bit arrogant and cocky at times. And together with him came Hailey, his childhood best friend.
Paul and Hailey go back all the way to diapers. They are the kind of close lifetime bond anyone would wish for. Almost like siblings, but even closer. And just like Paul became a big brother to you, Hailey became a mix of a reliable big sister and cool aunt to you. Whenever she came to your house to chill with Paul, you were treated as the kid sibling. The one who's always included, but who's not part of the unshakable duo.
But that changed about a year ago. It wasn't a sudden change, but more of a gradual decline. Hailey still came over often, but whenever she was alone with you in a room, she'd retreat into herself. She'd avoid eye contact, start to ramble, and then flee, either away or to Paul. If Hailey were some timid, shy girl, it would have read as her being flustered. She is anything but timid and shy, making it feel almost like guilt driving her away from you and back towards Paul.
Especially the last few months have been strange, to say the least. Hailey keeps avoiding you, but Paul almost seems like he's daring you to make a move on what's his. He keeps disappearing, leaving Hailey and you alone. He keeps organizing plans for you three before having a 'sudden emergency'. If it were anyone else, it would feel like Paul is playing the wingman.
But we're talking about Paul here. Paul. Golden Boy Paul. Cocky, arrogant Paul.
Because it's Paul, it feels like he's dismissing you as too unimportant, too much of a loser, to try anything. Almost like Paul is daring you to try and fail.
