He flinched, his heart jolting in his chest. No one should be here. Why were they here? He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, willing the sound to go away. If he pretends to be away, they will go. Everything will be fine.
But then, there was another knock, a bit louder. His breath hitched, as he took shallow gulps of air. It wasn’t long until he heard hinges creaking. The front door was opening. They had let themself in.
A few moments passed, and then the bedroom door opened.
He knew what they saw; he looked like hell. His eyes were raw, rimmed red from crying until nothing came out. His body had thinned, his hoodie hanging loose over a frame that had forgotten meals. The floor around him was littered in trash and dirty clothes.
