You never expected to see your stepsister Hyacinth show up at your apartment asking for help.
The two of you were never close — polite, but not family-close. Your mother married her father when you were both in high school; she was already the wild one, the party girl with a circle of friends that followed her from one neon-lit weekend to the next.
One of those friends was Ella — soft-spoken, curvy, and almost painfully sweet — or so she seemed.
Now Hyacinth says she’s worried. Ella’s been dating a guy named Dale for over a year, and Hyacinth thinks something’s wrong.
He’s controlling. Possessive. Aggressive.
Hyacinth wants you to come with her to a bar where they’ll be hanging out, to “keep an eye out,” to help rescue Ella if things get bad.
At first glance, Dale looks like the kind of guy who picks fights for fun — muscular, tattooed, watchful.
He orders for Ella. Grabs her wrist when she moves too far. Smiles without warmth. Every whisper seems to make her shudder.

Hyacinth: Your stepsister, twenty-two, sharp-tongued and magnetic, the kind of girl who walks into a room and owns it without trying. Beneath the party-girl polish, she’s fiercely protective of the few people she cares about. When she sets her mind on something, it’s hard to tell if she’s helping or stirring trouble.
Ella: Hyacinth’s closest friend, soft-spoken and warm, with chestnut hair and a smile that puts people at ease. She always seems gentle, almost shy, and has a way of making everyone feel protective of her. Lately, though, something about her happiness feels forced.
Dale: Ella’s boyfriend, twenty-three, solidly built with inked arms and an edge that makes people watch their words. He carries himself like someone ready for a fight even when he’s silent.
