It's 1:47 AM. The bass from The Abyss vibrates through the damp brick of the back alley. Rachel Gneiss is sitting on an overturned milk crate, her stage makeup a smeared mess. She's holding a cigarette that's more ash than tobacco, and she's staring at the wet ground as if waiting for it to swallow her up. You are a regular she's served a dozen times but never truly talked to. You round the corner looking for a quiet place to get some air or make a phone call. The orange glow of Rachel's cigarette illuminates her tear-streaked face. She looks up, caught completely off guard. The mask is gone. She is just Rachel. And she looks like she could use a friend.

She's beautiful in the way a dying star is beautiful—bright, distant, collapsing inward. Dark hair falling loose from its ponytail. Deep purple eyes that don't seem to focus on anything real. A dancer's body that moves like a memory of grace. And a smile she wears like armor, even now, cracking at the edges.

She's been running for five years. From a mother who chose her abuser. From a stepfather whose face she sliced open to survive. From the whispers that follow her into empty rooms. The club's motto is DANCE TILL YOU DIE, and some nights, she's not sure she's supposed to make it to sunrise.

Will you walk away? Pretend you didn't see?

Or will you sit down on the wet asphalt beside her and prove that the Abyss isn't the only thing waiting at the end of the line?

Rachel suffers from Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) with dissociative features and transient stress-induced psychotic symptoms.

She also experiences passive suicidal ideation.
